ZOMBIES, RUN! Running Game for Smartphones

You tie your shoes, put on your headphones, take your first few steps outside. You’ve barely covered a hundred yards when you hear them. They must be close.

You can hear every gutteral breath, every rattling groan – they’re everywhere. Zombies. There’s only one thing you can do: Run!

Zombies, Run! is an ultra-immersive game for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and Android where you help rebuild civilization after a zombie apocalypse. By going out and running in the real world, you can collect medicine, ammo, batteries, and spare parts that you can use to build up and expand your base – all while getting orders, clues, and story through your headphones.

It doesn’t matter where you run.
It doesn’t matter how fast you run.
It doesn’t matter how far you run.

Just run.

So… it’s about running?

Zombies, Run! is about making the thrill of running even better with a game and a story delivered through your headphones. Six to Start is making running more fun, more exciting, and more addictive for everyone from couch-to-5k newbies to weekend joggers and marathon runners. And Zombies, Run! works anywhere – in a park, along a beach, in the city, even on treadmills!

Also: they don’t make you watch your screen while you’re running; they don’t make you change your favorite routes; and you don’t need to buy any fancy armbands or tracking devices. All you do is press a button when you start, and another button when you’re done. That’s it. they follow your lead.

Story, Game, & Fitness App: A Triple (Zombie) Threat!

You’re Runner 5. Hundreds of lives are counting on you. You’ve got to help your base rebuild from the ruins of civilization by collecting critical supplies while avoiding roving zombie hordes. Can you save them?

You receive orders and hear the story told through radio messages and voice recordings between your own custom playlists. Missions last around 20-30 minutes in real time and there’ll be over 30 unique missions in Season 1.

You’ll automatically collect items like medicine, batteries, and ammo while running, and once you’re back home, you get to assign them to different parts of your base. Who needs the vitamins more, the soldiers or the doctors? Which buildings need extra defenses? It’s up to you – and the bigger your base, the more missions you’ll have access to.But what are the leaders of your base scheming about? How did you get there? Where did the zombies come from? There’s a deeper mystery to be uncovered, puzzles to be solved, websites to be discovered, documents to be viewed so you can learn the truth of what’s happened to the world.

Zombies, Run! records the distance, time, pace, and calories burned of all your runs, and we’re keen to add RunKeeper integration. There’s also the option to hear audio notifications of for time, distance, and pace during your run. If you want to get fit while also saving the world, this is the game for you.

HAHHAHAHA Developers geeks don’t run!!! But all jokes aside, What I like about the game is that it is a unique title that truly takes advantage of touch-screen and GPS technology, it takes your  daily routine and makes it more fun. Which is great since we all know exercise is not fun, even if we know it’s beneficial. I personally find this very intriguing it’s a  interesting concept & would love to see how this plays out especially the multiplayer that they may work into the game in the future.

  1. Darn.. Beat to the punch again! Honestly, I’m surprised more game developers have not thought about ways to “gamify” GPS apps. We saw Loopd and similar apps but they weren’t pushed hard enough.

The only problem with this sort of game is that GPS tends to kill battery life.. They may need to use a grid-based approach whereas GPS tracking is assisted via cell tower triangulation. With intermittent “pings”, you can conserve battery life and play practically around the clock.

Hmmm.. Thing is, if you are not particularly active, the zombies will get you… Imagine seeing people running away from invisible monsters. WAHAHA!!

What’s smart here is the 30-minute cap for missions. I think that’s something people can commit to, though I see 5-10 minutes being more feasible.. Work your dog walks into the routine. Smart game mechanics here.

You’re really sharing some rockin’ stuff, Nick.. hopefully, the rest of the Nips get with the program soon! ;o)

  2. Nick, you need to follow this up with more in-depth information.. Perhaps a developer interview? I could join in too. Look at all the hits on StumbleUpon bro. LOL

People love zombies about as much as lolcatz (which is TONS, BTW). I blogged about your article too.. Great work! =oD

    • Lets do iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit!

      • Got a response from Adrian Hot, CEO and Co-Founder of Six To Start. We have an interview tentatively slated for early next week. We’re trying to figure out if we’ll do it in text or text+audio format. Definitely excited!

The timing is perfect too as I’ve been looking to get back into game design again. Topics like game mechanics, gaming start-ups, and development tools will be fun to discuss from a more hardcore, underground gamer geek perspective.

Anything you guys would like to see discussed? Let us know.. And be sure to share this page through your social networking and bookmarking platforms.

        w00t w00t!

  3. Sound pretty cool. I’m downloading it on Android now to give it a try :P

A similar concept (GPS based game) I’ve stumbled across is Parallel Kingdoms, it might interest you.

    • Nice!

The name alone makes you curious. Surprised there’s not more buzz going around about these types of games. It’s an interesting sub-genre for sure!

So, tell us about Bart In A Box.. It’s awesome to meet more WordPress.com fellows! =oD

  4. yes I saw that I’m very excited about it myself not sure which way we should go about it yet hopefully our readers let us know which way they prefer.

  5. What an amazing idea. I normally run on a treadmill in the gym so I’d have to go find a track somewhere. I could just switch it up and hike a nearby mountain though. Nature and Zombies… murderously peaceful.

  6. I love the idea. Anything to get me off my butt and moving with the real world. As if, zombie are the real world…

    Thanks, Yomar. Another brilliant post.

  7. This surely makes great sense to anyone!

  8. Thats an all round amazingly written blog post…
